“Are Tribes Dead, Or Is A New Day Dawning?”

daily crushers.jpgRIP Tribes?
After all the rush and hubbub about marketing syndication tribes, are they already starting to fizzle out? After all, internet marketers by the hundreds joined tribes last year and early this year, sometimes several tribes. Syndication and traffic was the pot of gold they sought. But one-by-one many a tribe member lost momentum and their enthusiasm for syndicating waned. Oh there were some cool automation tools that came along and still have a lot of people excited, for a while anyway. But all-in-all the interest level in syndication has peaked. So are tribes dead? Are tribes too 2009?

Tribes Revisited
Before you pack up your laptop and delete your tribe’s group from your Skype contacts, think about why you joined a tribe in the first place. Was it to get traffic? Sure it was. Was it to meet new potential JV partners? You bet it was. And it was also to learn from best practices, to build a panel of advisors who could help you trouble-shoot your business, and to bring a bit more warmth into a technology focused profession! So before you give up on tribes, ask yourself whether they delivered any of these other benefits!

In my case tribes have more than delivered. My website traffic grew. My panel of advisors was formed. I met friends who have become JV partners. And I’ve had a lot of fun along the way.

The Death of Syndicating
I recommend we re-purpose our tribes. Syndication and backlinks are great, but if you’re going to invest time and energy into a tribe, don’t you deserve to receive more than a bunch of backlinks? Syndicating is the moral equivalent of factory work. The fact is, syndicating can be virtually automated now. Tribes are much too valuable to relegate to mere syndication drudgery!

Getting More Out of Tribes
I can understand why some people are dubious about tribes. After all there have been enough people who looked at tribes as little more than an arcade game. . . put in an hour of syndicating and get 10 hours of backlink play in return. People joined multiple tribes, and frankly, some people abused their privileges with tribes.

My tribe is The Daily Crushers. From the outset we did things a bit differently. For one thing we attracted people who wanted something different. In fact our recruiting slogans were “World Domination” and “Change the World Into a Better Place”. One thing we did differently was to form permanent small satellite tribes, called mini-tribes. Each mini-tribe was essentially a permanent tribe licensed to use the Daily Crusher name.

Because we created stable groups, relationships grew strong and deep. Trust was developed and three of our seven tribes actually started joint ventures and began developing their own products to be marketed by the greater membership. Infrastructure began to go into place such as affiliate tools and webinar software to support the entrepreneurial efforts of these tribes. And we noticed something else. Syndication was no longer the focus. Lifelong friendships and business partnerships were born.

“Tribe 2.0”: The Awesomeness of Tribes in the Future!
But if you’re a cynic and wonder whether tribes have a place in 2010 and beyond, I’ve got an idea that might just turn the tide for you. I call it “Tribe 2.0”. In my vision of the tribes of the future, the tribe becomes much more customized to your needs and focused on helping you become a success. We’re probably dropping syndication all together! In a word tribes are getting PERSONAL.

“Tribe 2.0” is a re-purposed and seriously improved version of the original. In “Tribe 2.0” we strip the requirement for syndication as a condition of membership. Instead of syndicating or promoting each other’s business, tribe members are going to be supported and mentored by the tribe. “Tribe 2.0” will have as its core purpose to grow the members’ skill levels and help them become crazy-successful in their business!

Incubator for Masterminds
“Tribes 2.0”builds on these experiences. I believe “Tribe 2.0” will become a mastermind incubation movement. Tribe members will be able to rely upon their trusted tribemates to help them build their businesses and thrive. I propose to completely change the mission of tribes to specifically focus on each member’s businesses. In “Tribe 2.0” members will work together to set meaningful business goals. They will hold each other accountable for achieving those goals and their commitments along the way. Members can brainstorm together. They can help each other with ideas, recommendations, and if necessary, labor. Checklists and benchmarks can be created to help assure that each member’s business is achieving all it can. Folks, that’s what masterminds do. That’s what “Tribe 2.0” will do. But “Tribe 2.0” will do it with all the options open for lifelong friendships, business partnerships and joint ventures, large groups of people joining together to share overhead costs like GoToWebinar accounts, Nanacast subscriptions and other support tools.

Oh, tribes can still syndicate if they want to. And tribes can develop products if they want to. But from now on tribe members can be assured that somebody’s in their corner to help assure that their business is a success and that they meet their objectives. And yes, in that corner will be tribemate lifelong friends!

So are tribes dead? No. They have only just begun! If you’re not in a tribe, join one. It’s one of the smartest business decisions you can make.

Training Newbies Need To Grab

My readers know that I don’t use my blog to promote affiliate products, but occasionally I don’t mind recommending a product that is going to actually help someone. Myu friend Melissa Ann Mitchell has created a training series to help newbie Internet marketers actually put their business together with her direct consultation. As an enticement for them to hear about the training, she’s put together a free 10-Video, 7-Day training course. I’m not an affiliate for her, but I know this course is going to help some folks, so I recommend you go grab it at . Check out this video I made to give you a good idea of what to expect from the course. I watched all the videos and think it’s great.

Effective Leadership: Character Is Required for Effective Leadership

Effective leadership is not an accident; rather it is the result of carefully culturing the qualities of leadership into your own personality and ethos. Character is one such quality, and it’s a biggie. I don’t have to remind you of the Enron scandal and the mortgage and banking debacles. Character is the guts to go with your convictions. Character is the true heart of authenticity and being real. Because character is all about whom you are, and what you stand for.

In The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader, John C. Maxwell explains that character is at the heart of our development as human beings, not just as leaders. Each day we make hundreds of choices, and some are at the crossroads of character and compromise. And each time we choose character, regardless of the consequence or reward, we grow deeper and stronger as people and leaders.

Maxwell suggests that there are four things everyone should bear in mind about character:

  • Character Is More than Talk – Character runs at the core of our personality. He suggests that it determines who we are, which dictates what we see, which results in what we do. So character is at the heart of intention and action. It just doesn’t go deeper than that.
  • Talent Is a Gift, but Character Is a Choice – Maxwell tells us that character is not something we are born with; rather it is created through the choices we make. And I would add that the choices we make are created through the character we have chosen. The fact that we can chose to have sterling character is great. In fact, if you think about it, it’s downright empowering if you want to provide effective leadership.
  • Character Brings Lasting Success with People – Nobody wants to follow a leader who is flawed. Think of Bill Clinton and the Intern Scandal. It’s not like he killed someone, or necessarily ruined anyone’s life. But he lied to the public. And that was a choice he made at the crossroads of character and compromise. That compromise cost him a lot of leadership effectiveness.
  • Leaders Cannot Rise Above the Limitations of Their Character - Maxwell also tells us that weak character carries a high price. He cites The Success Syndrome by Steven Berglas, a Harvard Medical School psychologist whose work suggests that character is a foundational trait. The stronger the foundation, the higher a person can rise. But when the person reaches the limits of that foundation they will suffer from one of 4 “A’s”: Arrogance, feelings of aloneness, unhealthy adventure-seeking, and adultery. These are the signs that a person has pushed beyond the ability of their character. I can think of a few governors and a senator who have had one of those problems in the past few years. What a cost!

Effective leadership requires a strong foundation of character, so how is your character? Maxwell suggests four things to do to improve it.  First, look for the cracks. Write down the recent choices you’ve made and whether or not you’ve compromised on what you know is right, or what you said you’d do. Second, identify any patterns in those compromises. Look for clues about your weaknesses by identifying patterns. Third, own the fault. You made the choices, so now you can follow through by apologizing, to yourself if nobody else was involved, or to others who were affected. This is a soul cleansing action. Now that you have a clean slate, the fourth action is to start rebuilding. Maxwell recommends creating a plan that will prevent any further compromises in your convictions.

And just so you know, I’ll be making my own plan too. Making compromises is human. We all do it. Owning up to them and doing something to prevent them in the future is a sign of true character! Keep building your character and providing effective leadership.

Purpose for Life: What is it You Really Want?

What is your purpose for life; what is it you really want?  Is that what you’re doing with your life?  I think that I’m like a lot of other people; I grew up wanting things.  I wanted the newest toys when I was a child; I wanted the things that other kids had.  And when I was older I wanted a car.  I wanted clothes like others had, later a cool job, a beautiful wife, a great house, and so on.  I learned that money got me some of the things I liked, so I wanted money.  And like other people sometimes I got what I wanted and sometimes I didn’t.  But there was a catch to it all.

Usually, in fact almost always, two things happened when I got what I wanted.  My interest in what I wanted diminished significantly once I got it, and always something else came up that I wanted and the whole cycle of “want and get” started over.  And this cycle continued year after year.

At some point, if you’re lucky, you realize that wanting and getting are tremendous drains on your energy.  And you begin to realize that there some things that you’d much rather have or that you’d passionately prefer to be doing with your life than “wanting and getting.”  And if you’re like me, that’s when you realize that you’re locked in financially to a “wanting and getting” system you’ve created; to high paying jobs you don’t like, but that you’ve struggled to get to pay for “wanting and getting.”  And you are trapped and begin a slow process of escaping the trap to live the real life you actually do want.

I wonder if a lot of people just stay right there.  Or do they break free and change their direction?  A film called “God and the Chocolate Ice Cream” by Nic Askew deals with wanting and getting.  It uses an analogy of a visit to the bookstore.  You pick out a stack of books that you want.  Then sort them.  First there are the ones you decide “no” you really don’t want much, then the ones that, “yes” you passionately do want, and the rest are those that “maybe” you want.  The question is, what do you do with the three stacks of books?

Do you say “yes” to the “yes” stack, “no” to the “no” stack and “no” to the “maybe” stack?  Or do you say “no” to your “yes” books, “yes” to your “no” books, and “yes & no” to your “maybe” books?  Or just “maybe” to all of them?  If you say “no” to your “yes” then are you denying yourself your passions?  If you say “yes” to your “no” are you stuck in a rat race of want and get?

So I ask you, in your life, and in your business, are you aligned with your purpose for life?  Or are you denying your passions and working for something that you really don’t want?  Life is short.  I say follow your passions.  Don’t spend your energy and your life struggling to get what you really don’t want and to become who you really are not!

Time Management Help: Regaining Balance In Your Life

Here is some time management help for internet marketers and network marketers whose lives seem out of control and who feel like they just can’t get anything done.  Seek to re-balance the key elements of your life.  We all need balance between the areas of your personal health, family, finance, intellectual development, our social lives, our professional or career endeavors, and our spiritual development.  The fact is that if we ignore one or more of these areas we become stressed.  Stress reduces your creativity and productivity.  And loss of productivity and creativity carries over into each area of your life.  That’s why it is important to re-balance and stay balanced.  Let’s deal with these key areas of life one at a time.

Some people may argue that your health is everything.  They’re not that far off.  Without your health you will suffer from stress, you will feel bad, and your performance will also be diminished.  In fact in extreme instances you may not be able to function in any of the areas of your life.  The best health advice I’ve ever received is four-fold.  First, eat like you want to live to be 120 years old.  Drink at least 8 glasses of pure water a day (that’s about a half gallon using my big iced tea glass). Get an hour of good exercise every day.  And finally, get at least 8 hours of restful sleep.  There are no surprises here, or at least there shouldn’t be.

Family is a commitment which commands a lot of energy in all of our lives.  First, if you have a family you have a responsibility to feed, clothe, shelter, and educate them.  This means that you have financial and career obligations to meet.  Of course there is the entire social and nurturing side of a family.  You must teach them all to be healthy, balanced and productive human beings.  So you can see that if you ignore your familial commitments you will quickly be spinning out of balance in multiple areas of your life.

The inability to meet financial obligations is a primary reason for the breakup of marriages, increased stress, and general misery in people’s lives.  If you ignore your financial obligations it will quickly affect other areas of your life, causing even more stress, and even more misery.

We all have a need to feed our intellectual selves.  It is our intellect that helps us deal with outside stimuli which affects our lives.  If we are out of balance mentally, if we are not building knowledge and skill regularly, and if we are not holding ourselves to accountability for decision making, we will quickly become stressed and our personal productivity will suffer.  A sharp mind is a critical tool for success.

Human beings are social creatures.  We thrive in a social environment.  After all, it is our social drive which ultimately allowed our ancestors to develop civilization.  This is a core need for all of us.  If you are too busy working or dealing with other aspects of your life and ignore your need for friends and community, you will suffer.  This suffering will cause stress, and you guessed it, lower productivity.  So don’t ignore your social life.  And don’t overemphasize it either.  Keep in balance.

Our career, our profession or business is how we feed our family, pay the bills, and keep our lives moving.  If you are ignoring continual education and skill-building in your profession, if you are sagging in your work performance or decision skills, you will soon find yourself out of balance.  And this is a critical area supporting all the other areas of your life.  Keep in balance.  And need I say, some people overemphasize their careers and work.  This of course also can be detrimental.  Isn’t that word “balance” a handy little thing?

Regardless of your belief system or faith tradition, very few will argue that developing and exercising our spiritual lives is critical for healthy and positive living.  Our spiritual lives help guide the way we interpret and deal with relationships to other people, our relationships with ourselves, and how we see the meaning of life and your concept and relationship to God.  If you’re out of balance here, you’re in some trouble.

I think you can see how a balanced approach to all seven key areas of your life can keep you at your maximum productivity.  But how can you do it?

The fact is that until you assess your performance and the amount of emphasis you are currently placing on each area of your life, you cannot make a dispassionate judgment on whether and what is out of balance.  By simply becoming aware of the importance of balance in the various areas of your life, and by being alert to your current emphasis and status in each area, you can begin effecting the necessary changes.  Then by applying sound time management tools and techniques, you can begin increasing your productivity, improve your energy and proficiency, and start freeing up more time so you can emphasize other neglected areas of your life.

Try to assess where you stand on the balance scales of your own life.  By re-balancing your life keeping it that way, you will succeed in more areas of your life.

World Peace Is Inevitable – We’re One Tribe Y’all!

Do you ever wonder why some people are pessimistic and some are optimistic? Do you ever wonder why the news is generally negative instead of positive? Seems to me that it is simply mindset. Mindset is habitual construct for how you “see” (interpret and digest) what you encounter in the world. I’d like to invite you to join me in the Adventure Of A Lifetime, join me in creating a new mindset in the world. . . “World Peace Is Inevitable”.

The simple fact is that if you Google “World Peace” you’ll find 484,00 pages, of which less than 90 actually use the phrase. On the flip side, if you Google “”The World Is Going To End” there is a MASSIVE 232,000,000 pages with that phrase.

Billy Guilfoyle is a monk who recommends that we each become a “Walking World Peace” by just giving unconditional love to every person we meet. I find his video below to be one of the most powerful, healing and instructional videos I’ve encountered.

One of the great world adventurers I’ve encountered is John Haines, who literally travels the wilds of the world and speaks on peace, posted a great blog on “World Peace Is Inevitable“. I found his post so powerful that I made this page for you. I’d also like you to see another post by my friend Heather Taskovics which was inspired by the Black Eyed Peas song “One Tribe”.   Join us in declaring “World Peace Is Inevitable”. Soon enough it will catch on, and when people begin saying it, they’ll believe it, and it will begin to happen. Email me and let me know you’re joining us!  After all, we’re all one tribe!

Thanks,

Online Marketing Classes – Top 20 Lead Generation Techniques

Online marketing classes often present lead generation techniques, but typically only discuss one or a handful.  But I want you to know that there is a wide spectrum of alternatives for you.  And remember, if you are new to online marketing, just master a couple or three.  I recently wrote my recommendations of techniques for newcomers.  Here is a list of the 20 most popular techniques.  Think of this list as the desert tray at your favorite resaurant!

So, here it is:

Top 20 Lead Generation Techniques (in no particular order)

o  Blogging
o  Article Marketing
o  Social Bookmarking (yes it can generate leads)
o  Hub Pages
o  Squidoo Lenses
o  Video Marketing  (one of my very favorite)
o  Twitter Marketing
o  Facebook Marketing  (excellent for age 25 plus)
o  Audio Marketing (mp3, podcasts, audio e-books)
o  Forum Marketing
o  MySpace Marketing
o  Directory Marketing
o  Press Release Marketing
o  Banner Advertising
o  Ezine Advertising
o  Facebook Advertising
o  PPC Advertising (Google, Yahoo)
o  Free Classified Advertising (online & offline)
o  Radio Advertising (powerful if used right)
o  Newspaper, Trade Journal & Magazine Advertising

Okay, if you’re a purist, I admit that the last two are essentially offline techniques.  But they are still very powerful.

Online Marketing Classes Part 2 – DIRECT MARKETING

To begin understanding online marketing, one should first understand its older brother, direct marketing (you may know it as mail-order marketing & advertising).  Direct marketing uses a number of channels, some free and some paid.  There is marketing by mail, by phone, by 800 number, by radio, by TV, and even by personal visit.  More important to our purpose, Direct Marketing can also use the Internet.  For most of us corporate marketers who learned about mass marketing, direct marketing is perceived as a lesser form of marketing.  Well, having immersed myself in direct marketing I am one MBA who can report that it is a serious, reliable, and measurable discipline which produces results which are often far superior to mass marketing.  And it is absolutely necessary if you want to succeed in online marketing.

Direct marketing is marketing focused on the buyer, hence “direct” to buyer marketing.  Trust me, if corporations appreciated the possibilities offered by direct marketing, they would begin to use direct marketing techniques to absolutely skyrocket sales.  So take notes if you are a corporate marketer.  Be on the lookout for ways of identifying and reaching your target audience directly.  The good news is that with the internet and social media, now it is easier than ever before.

And the advent of the Internet and social marketing has made the Internet marketing form of direct marketing very attractive to entrepreneurs and home based business owners.  Not only is it easier than ever to find and reach the target audience, it is inexpensive.  It is entirely possible to market your products and services for free using online techniques, although it is much faster with paid advertising.

So have you noticed any websites that have huge bold headlines at the top, followed by a whole lot of narrative text and periodic pleas for you to buy?  If so you’ve encountered one of direct marketing’s most recognizable features, the sales letter.  You may have observed how long some of them are, seemingly unending.  This is because measurements have proven that longer sales letters sell more than shorter sales letters.  You may also have noted that the content is not heavily adorned with a lot of imagery.  This is because measurement has proven that editorial-looking sales copy sells better than fancy, decorative, pretty sales copy.  Oh, you may also have noticed that they seem to make some pretty amazing claims.  Well, you guessed it, measurement again.

nobsdirectmktg

Dan Kennedy is considered by many to be the father of modern direct marketing.  He lays out 10 Rules for Direct Marketing, or as he states it, “The No B.S. Rules”.  There are reasons occasionally for violating some of these rules, but for the most part consider them Direct Marketing Law.  These laws apply to Internet Marketing just as they do to mail and other forms of direct marketing:
- There Will Always Be an Offer or Offer(s)
- There Will Be a Reason to Respond Right Now
- There Will Be Clear Instructions (for Customers) on How to Respond
- There Will Be Tracking and Measurement
- Whatever Brand Building Occurs Will Be a Happy By-Product, Not Bought
- There Will Be Follow-Up
- There Will Be Strong Sales Copy, Not Vague Hyperbole
- In General, It Will Look Like “Mail-Order Advertising”
- Results Rule, Period
- You Will Be a Tough-Minded Disciplinarian and Keep Your Business On A Strict DIRECT Marketing Diet…

So here are the 10 “No BS Rules” for Direct Marketing.  Each of these rules deserves a chapter in our study of Internet Marketing.  Direct marketing is a mature form of marketing deserving our respect and attention.  In upcoming posts and videos I intend to indirectly convey more about Direct Marketing through my discussion of Online Marketing.  Until then I highly recommend Dan Kennedy’s benchmark book, No B.S. Direct Marketing:  The Ultimate No Holds Barred Kick Butt Take No Prisoners Direct Marketing For Non-Direct Marketing Businesses.  Yes, it’s a long title and not just a little irreverent.  Welcome to Direct Marketing.

Online Marketing Classes Part 1 – The Big Picture

I want to make it much easier for newcomers to learn online marketing by creating a structured overview, a construct or framework, upon which newcomers can begin developing working mental models of the business.  Unfortunately the current learning curve for online marketers takes most people a year of hard work, lots of expensive training, courses and webinars, and a lot of trial and error.

Most marketing disciplines have the advantage of academicians and theoreticians who devote inordinate amounts of time to structuring and dissecting their disciplines.  While we wait for the academic world to catch up, I intent to create a series of posts and videos I will construct a newcomer’s framework understanding and mastering the new discipline of online marketing.  I hope this can help you.

Some of the topics I will cover include:

  • o Direct Marketing Parentage
  • o Attraction Marketing – Did They Teach This In College?
  • o Internet Marketing Models – Lead-Based Marketing (typical for MLM), Affiliate Marketing, etc.
  • o Managing Your Web Resources
  • o Selecting Products and/or Services (Solutions) For Sale
  • o Communicating Your Solution Effectively (The Art of Converting Leads)
  • o Building Traffic To Your Site
  • o Just What Is A Sales Funnel And How Do You Make Them (And What Is A Funded Proposal And An Autoresponder?)
  • o Personal Branding – Becoming The Recognized Expert
  • o Affiliate Marketing – Creating A Virtual Sales Force
  • o Powering Up – Joint Ventures With Current Leaders
  • o Series on Lead Generation Marketing Strategies (Categorized as Online Strategies, Social Media Strategies, Advertising Strategies, and Networking Strategies)
  • o Series on Selling Skills
  • o Other Stuff I Think About As I Go

My intention is not to create a detailed training program.  This has already been done quite well by a few sources, and to a lesser degree by many others.  Instead this will serve as an overview, much like a survey course you might see in college.  The point is to provide a framework and a more global perspective on where the parts all fit in order to speed the learning process for newcomers, and help fill in some gaps for others.  Wish me well because your future downlines may be grateful.

Phil Jackson, MBA
